Nach "dizzy up the girl" (6 Millionen verkaufte Alben) und den starken Hitsingles "iris", "slide" und "black ballon" waren John Rzeznik (Gitarre und Gesang), Robby Takac (Bass und Gesang) und Mike Malinin (Schlagzeug) stark gefordert.

Die Goo Goo Dolls haben uns nicht enttäuscht. Akustische sowohl als auch elektrische Gitarren lassen das typische Goo Goo Dolls Klangbild entstehen. Es entstand eine Harmonie vom Anfang bis zum Ende. Es zeigt sich zwecklos, irgendwelche Topsongs aus diesem Album zu erwähnen. Nicht ein "Wegwerfsong" ist auf "Gutterflower" anzutreffen. Die Goo Goo Dolls überzeugen mit starken Songs, gespickt mit Balladen und punkpoppigen Powersongs.
Ihre Single "here is gone" steht bereits auf der Heavy Rotation Liste von Viva Swiss, Viva plus und MTW. Es wird nicht die letzte Erfolgssingle aus "Gutterflower" sein.
